The Birds

I painted the initial sketch on accident, intending to create something totally different but ending up with these bird-like creatures of soft shapes combined with clear, strong lines. The figures really fascinated me, and I instantly felt like they needed to be made three dimensional. With the tactility of the sculptures being of importance, I wanted them to look like they feel nice to touch and hold in your hands. Creating a specific sense of emotion with each piece, their individual personalities evolve during the process. Exploring contrasting textures such as polished wood and brass, and the sense of weight and balance through the kinetic pieces. I use the tools I already have access to, focusing on sustainability and locally sourced natural materials: soapstone from our old fireplace, scrap metal and Black Alder wood from my grandfather’s studio. These sculptures are direct reflections of the different qualities in the materials utilized, I base the final shapes on the natural movements and patterns in the wood and stone, working with it rather than against it.
